Personal protective clothing requirements when working on the Metrolink network

This Standard defines the minimum requirements for personal protective equipment (PPE) and work wear to be worn whilst accessing the Metrolink Infrastructure and undertaking work activities on or near the line.

This specification applies throughout Metrolink and to contractors and suppliers working on Metrolink infrastructure.

This standard does not apply to emergency services personnel, Her Majesty's Railway Inspectorate, or to Rail Accident Investigation Branch.

Mainline

• High visibility upper body clothing with reflective tape which complies with BS EN 471: 2003 class 2 and Railway Group Standard RIS/3279/TOM.
• HV orange lower body clothing to BS EN 471:2003 class 1 and Railway Group Standard RIS/3279/TOM as a minimum (HV trousers or HV over-trousers)

• A safety helmet that complies with BS EN 397: 1995. The safety helmet shall be white in colour.

• Safety footwear which complies with EN-iso-20345-s1p, provides support to the ankle, includes mid-sole protection, and has a protective toe cap. Where used, steel or other conductive toe caps must be covered.

• Safety glasses that comply with EN166 1F

• Cut-Resistant gloves that complies with EN 388:2016

Depot Sidings

• High visibility upper body clothing with reflective tape which complies with BS EN 471: 2003 class 2 (e.g. a vest) and Railway Group Standard RIS/3279/TOM.
• HV orange lower body clothing to BS EN 471:2003 class 1 and Railway Group Standard RIS/3279/TOM as a minimum (HV trousers or HV over-trousers)
• Safety footwear which complies with EN-iso-20345-s1p, provides support to the ankle, includes mid-sole protection, and has a protective toe cap. Where used, steel or other conductive toe caps must be covered.

• Bump hat that complies with EN 812 or A safety helmet that complies with BS EN 397: 1995.
